Abstract: To study the effect of the fit clearances on the skin/core bond, a series of composite sandwich samples with different artificial fit clearances were designed and fabricated, their quality of the skin/core bond was checked by ultrasonic C scan and mechanical performances were measured and analyzed by testing machine. The results of clearance checking were recorded and shot to get a further understanding about the effect of the fit clearance. It is found that the skin/core debond occurred when the fit clearance was thicker than the thickness of the adhesive. A good skin/core bond could be obtained when the foaming adhesive was used to fill the fit clearance as the compensatory adhesive. The reliability of the test to check the clearance depended on the vacuum degree in the bag greatly. The profile of the honeycomb core was milled into steps, which was more beneficial to the skin/core bond than the oblique plane machined.
