Abstract: Finite element model (FEM) of the impact between head impactor and carbon fiber sandwich composite was established. The head injury criterion (HIC) has been calculated by using the software DIAdem. The model has been verified to be valid through the steel ball impact experimnet. The numbers of layers, the thickness of foam, the stack sequence, their role on the HIC and deformation have been investigated. It was shown that adding the foam could save the quantity of CFRP without increasing the HIC and deformation; Too large or too small foam thickness is not good for pedestrian protection, it has a optimal value; Isotropic lay-up will leads to a low HIC.
