Abstract: Drilling induced delamination often caused the peeling at the entrance and the pushing at the exit of composite materials. Because of the thrust force being the main factor of delamination, it was necessary to control the thrust force for improving hole quality. This paper designs three different drill process consist of twist drill (without pilot hole), twist drill (with pilot hole) and step drill. Based on the existing axial thrust force model of these processes, the thrust force at the beginning of delamination with diameter ratio, the thrust force with hole depth and feed rate were analyzed, and the hole quality was observed by SEM. The results indicate that step drill and pilot hole can drastically decrease the thrust force and improve the hole quality.
