Abstract: PPU-modified PF was successfully synthesized by introducing polypropylene urethane prepolymer (PPU) into phenolic resin (PF) by in situ closure method using phenol and formaldehyde as raw materials. The chemical structures and properties of the modified resins and PPU were investigated by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the effects of PPU additions on the mechanical properties of modified resins were investigated by means of an electronic universal testing machine and a single-arm pendulum impact testing machine. The fracture surface morphology was also analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the thermal and damping properties of the modified resins were also tested by thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and dynamic thermomechanical analyzer (DMA) instrument. The results show that as the PPU addition increases, the mechanical properties of the modified resin and the Tg initially increase and then decrease, and the mechanical properties of the modified resin are optimal at 10% PPU addition with an obvious toughening effect. The damping properties of all PPU modified phenolic resins are significantly improved.
